A celebration of Dorsey Wayne Byers life will be held at 2:00 P.M., Saturday, September 24, 2016 at Cedar Crest Baptist Church with Dr. Greg Clark officiating. Visitation will be 12:00 P.M. until service time at the church. Interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Gardens under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home of West Monroe.Dorsey Wayne Byers was born on December 4, 1932 in Hope, AR and made his trip to Heaven on September 21, 2016. Dorsey was preceded in death by his parents, Orie and Opal Byers of Hope, AR; two sisters, Juanita Byers and Iris Jean Bohannon; two brothers, Raymond Byers and Jimmy Byers. He is survived by his lovely wife of 54 years, Nancy; his daughter, Beth Thurman and her husband, Randy of Calhoun, LA; two grandsons, Parker Thurman of Opelousas, LA and Davis Thurman of Calhoun, LA; two sisters, Laveta Norris of Lake Charles, LA and Sandra Massanelli of Hope, AR; and two brothers, Jerry Byers of The Villages, FL and Dubs Byers of Gould, AR. After graduating from high school in 1950, Dorsey joined the Navy where he spent two years in San Diego, CA, putting ships back in commission to be used in the Korean War and two more years in the Philippines with the Seabees building a Naval Air Base for use during the war. He was discharged as a Second Class Petty Officer in 1955.After the Navy, Dorsey enrolled at Southern State College in Magnolia, AR in pre-engineering and graduated from the University of Arkansas in 1959 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering.Dorsey worked over 55 years in the pulp and paper industry with International Paper Company, St. Regis Paper Company, and as a paper mill consultant for Ford, Bacon and Davis. His two priorities during his life were his Lord and his family. God used both his job and his marriage as a training ground for his life on earth and for his future life in Heaven. Dorsey and Nancy were involved in helping to plant 3 churches during their years of ministry and were involved in helping to start and serve in the Chinese Ministry at First Baptist Church at Monroe for over 10 years. For the past several years, they have attended and been a part of Cedar Crest Baptist Church.
