Joe Ragan AswellFuneral services for Joe Ragan Aswell, age 76, of Choudrant, LA will be 2:00 P.M. Monday, September 19, 2016 at First Baptist Church Choudrant. Officiating the service will be Rev. Werner Aswell, Rev. David Harrell, and Rev. Jeremy Jones. Interment will follow at Choudrant Memorial Cemetery in Choudrant, LA under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home of Ruston. Visitation will be 5:00 until 8:00 P.M. Sunday, September 18, 2016 at Kilpatrick Funeral Home in Ruston, LA.Mr. Aswell was born on January 30, 1940 in Shreveport, LA and died on September 16, 2016 in Ruston, LA.Ragan lived to work, and then work some more. He enjoyed raising cattle, baling hay and working in the garden. He drew structures or projects on paper and then built them whether it was trailers, barns, sheds, fences, chicken pens, birdhouses or whatever. Ragan produced a bountiful garden each year. His work ethic was fueled by his motto that nothing is impossible with a little effort and a lot of hard work. He never retired because he loved going to work and visiting with his buddies and drinking coffee.Ragan lived in Choudrant all his life. He graduated from Choudrant High School, attended Louisiana Tech University and was a member of the Army National Guard.He started into business for himself in 1960, opening Aswell Gulf Service Station, and then later having a custom welding service. He and his brother, Wayne, established Aswell Brother Fertilizer in 1971. He later opened Aswell Fertilizer and Feed Store with son-in-law, Steve. Ragan is a former original committee member for the Northeast Louisiana Expo Center, has sat on the Board of Community Trust Bank and is a past member of the Louisiana Cattlemen Association. In 1967, Ragan joined the village of Choudrant Town Council as an Alderman and served 12 terms. He was preceded in death by his parents, W.L. and Jewel Wade Aswell; brothers, Larry and Roy Aswell; and nephew, Roy Aswell, Jr.His greatest joy was his family. He was married to and survived by Mary Ford Aswell for 58 years; two daughters, Ellen Aswell of Choudrant; Dawn Aswell Moore and husband Steve of Choudrant; granddaughter, Joella and Addy Seay; grandson, Colt Moore; sisters, Barbara Parnell, Betty Adams, Beverly Aswell; brother, Wayne Aswell and wife Cathy; and sister-in-law, Sybil Aswell.Pallbearers will be Jacob Aswell, Larry Aswell, Henry Butler, Jamie Justice, Bobby Joe Milner, Eddie Parnell, Derek Pesnell, and Doug Richardson.
