Betty Ponder Hoffman returned to the arms of her Savior, Jesus Christ on September 12, 2017.
Her love and devotion for her family; and God remained paramount through her final days.

Betty was born May 5, 1927 in Hampton, Georgia to Arthur Dawson and Rosa Lane Ponder. She was one of three siblings. She graduated from Hampton High School where she served as a point guard on the basketball team. Betty was a competitive individual who prided herself in being the best.

After WWII ended, Betty met the love of her life, Charles Hoffman, on a blind date. They married on January 12, 1951, and began building a life together, centered around their mutual devotion to God and family. Together they had three children, nine grandchildren, and four great grandchildren. Betty and Charles enjoyed spending time together gardening, watching various sports teams, and participating in church activities. She and Charles celebrated 66 loving years of marriage this year.

Betty was known as an accomplished seamstress, avid gardener, and excellent cook. Although
she enjoyed many things, her greatest joy was found in being a mother. She took great pride in
her work as a homemaker and performed her duties with excellence and respect for the
responsibilities she was given. Betty was blessed with a heart for service and an appreciation for order and organization. This was evident from the minute you visited her home.

Betty and Charles were members of Temple Baptist Church in Ruston, Louisiana where she served in the nursery for over 50 years. This was one of her great joys. She had a way of relating to people across generations. Betty remembered the babies she rocked and cared for and often followed their lives well into adulthood. She felt it was important to give all of God’s children a strong foundation rooted in the Lord.

Although she will be greatly missed she leaves a legacy of love, faith, and excellence that will be valued and followed for years to come. The Bible states in Colossians that whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not men. Betty was an example of having a heart for the Lord overflowing into her work with man.

She is survived by her devoted husband, Charles Ellzey Hoffman, daughter, Kathy Hoffman Shealy of Ruston, LA; daughter, Bonnie Hoffman Roberts and her husband, Terry, of Alexandria LA; son Charles Ellzey Hoffman Jr. of San Antonio, TX; and grandchildren Lindsey Shealy Purvis and husband, Jeff; John Andrew Shealy; Erin Roberts and wife, Julie; Clayton Roberts, Thomas Roberts, Anna Hoffman Akin and husband, Jacob; Elizabeth Hoffman, Sara Hoffman and Kathleen Hoffman; and four great grandchildren.

Her family would like to express their sincerest gratitude to her devoted friends and caregivers of Russ Place and Compassus Hospice. A special thank you is extended to Nancy Stewart who has faithfully cared and served the Hoffman’s with the love and compassion of Christ.

A memorial service celebrating Betty’s life will be held at 3:00 p.m. Friday, September 15, 2017 at Temple Baptist Church Chapel in Ruston, Louisiana. Reverend Reggie Bridges and Reverend Dale Oden will officiate. A private family burial service will be held at Pines Memorial Cemetery in Ruston, Louisiana, under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home of Ruston.
