Funeral services for Byrnie Handy Smith, 88, of Monroe, will be held at 2:00 pm on Monday, September 3, at St. Paul's United Methodist Church with Rev. J. Roddy Taylor and Rev. Chad Brooks officiating. Visitation will precede the service at 1:00 pm in the church parlor. Interment will follow the services at Hasley Cemetery in West Monroe under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home, Monroe. Mrs. Smith passed away on September 1 following a brief illness. Named in honor of her grandmother's governess, “Miss Byrne” and aunt, Byrnie Cason Handy Waelder, Byrnie was a third generation Monroyan. She graduated from Louisiana State University with a Bachelors of Science in Education, followed by graduate studies in Social Work. After the accidental death of her husband, Dr. William E. Smith, Jr., in 1967, she became the Chief Social Worker at the Louisiana Baptist Children's Home, a post she held for twenty years. “Her children” at the Home always remained close to her heart. Byrnie and Bill were charter members of St. Paul's United Methodist Church in 1952, where she taught Sunday School for many years. She was an active alumnus in Chi Omega, a Monroe Junior League member and sustainer, and President of the Louisiana Dental Auxiliary. She also was president and honorary life member of the Monroe Garden Club and president of the Town and Country Garden Club. She was a member of both the Fort Miro Chapter of the National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution and the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America for over sixty years. Byrnie was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. B.B. Handy, Sr. of Monroe, her husband, a son, Charles Sterling Smith, Esq., and granddaughter, Mollie Stanton Nobile. Survivors include her brother, B.B. Handy, Jr. and wife, Patricia of Collinston; son, Robert E. Smith and his wife Elizabeth of Monroe; daughter, Catherine S. Nobile of Shreveport; granddaughter, Anna Cason Nobile of Boston, and nieces and nephews. Pallbearers will be Thomas Hayes, III, Edward “Bo” Shaw, Jr., B.B. Handy, III, John Handy, William Handy, Adam Handy, Hugh Nobile, and Miles Sager. Memorials may be made to the Louisiana Baptist Children's Home in Monroe, the LSU Health Sciences Foundation in Shreveport, or the charity of one's choice. The family thanks Dr. Zwank, the third floor nursing staff at Glenwood Regional Medical Center, and Louisiana Hospice and Palliative Care for easing her final days.
