A memorial service for Era Byrd Chandler will be held at 2 PM on Saturday, August 20, 2016, in the Burkhalter Chapel of Trinity United Methodist Church. Reverend Leslie Stephens will officiate. Private family interment will be at Forest Lawn Cemetery.Mrs. Chandler died Wednesday, August 10, 2016, at the Alpine Senior Care Center in Ruston, Louisiana, after a long illness.She was born in Dodson, Louisiana, on October 11, 1921, to Esther Williamson and Roland McCray Pullen. She earned aBA in music from Louisiana Tech and, later, an MA in music from Boston University and an MA in library science from Louisiana State University. Mrs. Chandler taught music in public schools in Shreveport, for a time directing the choir at C. E. Byrd High School. After moving to Ruston, where she resided at 1401 Madera St., she taught at the Louisiana Tech A.E. Phillips Lab School.Mrs. Chandler was a beloved teacher known for her innovative teaching methods. In her years of retirement she enjoyed quilting and reading. Quietly modest and never seeking attention or praise, she will be remembered for her warm hospitality, good cooking, and endearing quickness to laugh.She is survived by her husband of 73 years, Weldon K. Chandler; a sister, Janice Pullen Hunter of New Orleans; two children, Julie LEnfant of Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Kenneth A. Chandler of Shreveport; one granddaughter, The Reverend Jamie LEnfant Edwards of Greensboro, North Carolina; and a great-grandson, Brian Rachal, also of Greensboro. Mrs. Chandler will be greatly missed by her large extended family and many friends.The family wishes to thank Mrs. Chandler devoted caregivers, especially Patty Hamm Reynolds, Pamela Cooper, Angela Tucker, and staff at the Alpine and Professional Hospice Care.
