Everett L. Roper,Sr., E.L. went home to heaven on Saturday, June 28 , 2014. He was 93 years old.He was born in Ada, OK on August 23, 1920 and moved to LA in 1939 where he met and married Effie Mae Hilton. As a World War II veteran who served with both the Army Air Corps and Signal Corps in the European theater, earning the Good Conduct Medal, Presidential Unit Citation, and seven Battle Stars, he exemplified the greatest generation. Following his military service he enjoyed a successful career as a farmer, auto mechanic and service station owner. In his retirement years he was widely known for his superb woodworking craftsmanship. His handcrafted cedar chests are prized by people all across the country. PaPaw loved playing golf, dominoes, and storytelling. He was an avid Atlanta Braves fan, and played church softball well into his 70‚. He was a faithful member of Emmanuel Baptist church who lived his faith daily, and set a great example for his children and grandchildren.Funeral services with Reverend Terry Mims officiating will be at Emmanuel Baptist Church in Monroe, LA at 10:00 o’clock, Tuesday, July 1st, followed by interment at Red Wing Cemetery near Oak Grove, LA. Visitation will be Monday, June 30 at Kilpatrick Funeral Home 1200 Lamy Lane in Monroe from 5 to 7 pm.Donations in memory of E.L. may be made to Emmanuel Baptist Church.
