Funeral services for Floe Lambert Martin, age 97, of Bernice, LA, will be 9:30 AM Saturday, July 23, 2012, at Bernice City Cemetery with Dr Johnie Adkins, Jr. officiating the service. Interment will follow under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home of Ruston, LA. Mrs. Martin was born on August 12, 1914, in Spearsville, LA, and died on June 17, 2012, in Bernice, LA. Floe was the third child born to Calvin Joshua and Edna Johnson Lambert. When Floe was 2 years old, her mother died, and she went to live with her Uncle, Thaddeus Johnson, and his wife, Lona Allgood Johnson, at their farm in Summerfield. While Floe grew up on the farm in Summerfield, she remained in close touch with her father and siblings throughout their lifetimes. She met Hugh Garrett Martin, her husband of 65 years, while she was working in Blytheville, AR and he was stationed at the Army Air Force Base there. They were married on February 13, 1945, in Chicago, IL. After the war, they settled in Sacramento, CA, where their only child Stephen Hugh was born. Floe was anxious to return to her family, and in 1948, the family moved to Bernice, where she and Hugh owned Martin's Store, a grocery and general merchandise business, which they operated until 1983. Floe and Hugh were active members of the Bernice United Methodist Church for over 60 years. Until very recently Floe held weekly United Methodist Women meetings at her home. They lived in the same house for 60 years, and Floe was well known for having a beautiful yard. She was a charter member of the Bernice Garden Club, and remained a member until her death. Mrs. Martin was preceded in death by her husband, parents, uncle and aunt, two sisters, Doris Robinson and Janice Goss and a brother, Roy Lambert; her stepmother Dora Cole Lambert, and her step siblings Olivia Pickens, Marie Carroll, Eunice Cole, Harrell Cole, Van Cole, and George Cole. She is survived by son, Steve Martin and wife Phamie of Summerfield, three grandchildren and three great grandchildren; Caroline Byerman and husband David and their children Amanda and William of Las Vegas, NV; Thad Martin and wife Melissa and their son Russell of Austin, TX; Susan Martin and husband Andrew Hecox of Raleigh, NC; her niece Debbie Vlahakos and husband Vie and great nieces- Cynthia Butler and her husband Kevin and their daughter Maranatha and Alicia Motter and her husband Buddy, all of Houston. Mrs. Martin is also survived by Ann Comfort, her dear friend and caregiver of 16 years, other devoted caregivers are Felipa Guzman, Mae Bertha Taylor, Leticia Lopez and Lucille Thompson In honor of Mrs. Martin, the family wishes that memorials be made to the Bernice United Methodist Church, P O Box 189, Bernice, LA 71222.
