Kathleen Brister, 92, of West Monroe, passed away, surrounded by her children, on Friday, July 15, 2022. She is survived by her son, Macky and wife Dianne, son, Tommy and wife Kim; daughter-in-law, Sandra Brister; brother, Royce Calhoun; sister, Ollie V. Tietje; 5 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandchild; and numerous nieces and nephews. While it brings us the greatest personal sadness, we find comfort in our faith, and long for our eternal reunion.
Preceding her death are her father and mother, Make and Jewel Calhoun; her husband, Arshal Brister; and son, Jim Brister; her sisters, Florice Young, Shirley Archibald, Marie Pilgram, Virginia Campbell, June Strange; and her brothers, Sherwood, Farris, Buford, Earl, John Calvin, Rushel, and Mack Calhoun.
Kathleen had unconditional love for everyone she met. She was a charter member at Cedar Crest Baptist Church. Her most important relationship, was with Jesus Christ, her Lord and Savior. Kathleen spent countless hours in the prayer room writing hundreds of prayer lines that people still cherish to this day. She was an avid reader and studied God’s word every morning for several hours. Kathleen was a nurse at St. Francis Medical Center where she took care of many patients with love and compassion. She enjoyed crocheting baby blankets, quilting, playing bingo and scrabble, with her dear friends at the Senior Center. Kathleen’s favorite pastime was cooking and serving meals for anyone and everyone that showed up at her table. When asked for her recipes, she would respond, “Oh, it’s a little bit of this and a little bit of that”. Some of her family’s favorites included homemade bread, dressing, coconut cake, and her famous tea cakes. She prided herself in the food that the Lord had provided from either the garden or from the outdoors. She had a special love for cooking and serving others. The food was blessed before every meal and she never sat down to eat until everyone else was served.
