Margaret Euna Gates Rugg, 92, of West Monroe, Louisiana, passed through the veil to the spirit world to be reunited with loved ones who have passed on before and to await the resurrection made possible by the atonement and resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.Euna laid her mortal body to rest in peace on April 24, 2017 following a three-year battle with cancer. Born in Point, Louisiana on October 9, 1924, to William “Bill” Gates and Lottie Ann Hinton Gates, she lived a life filled with community and church service that took her to many parts of the United States. Euna received her high school degree from Farmerville High School where she played basketball. On February 16, 1943, she married Raymond (Ray) Ramsey Rugg of Cross Roads, Louisiana. They resided first in Cross Roads for eight years, then Sterlington, Louisiana for four years, and then moved to Monroe, Louisiana where they lived well into their retirement years. The couple spent most of those 74 years together serving others and traveling. As a couple, they served two 18-month missions for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints during their senior years. One mission was in West Virginia and a second one was in Nauvoo, Illinois. They also served a six-month mission in the LDS Monticello Temple in Southeastern Utah. At various times in retirement, the couple lived in Mesa, Arizona, Southwestern Colorado, and Canton, Texas for extended periods of time. Recently, they returned to The Twin Cities (Monroe/West Monroe), the place where they had reared their four sons. They were residing together in the same room at Stoneybrook Memory Care at 308 Norris Lane at the time of her passing. The family wishes to extend their sincere thanks to her oncologists, Dr. Marc E. Usrey of Tyler, Texas and Dr. Scott Barron of Monroe. A special thanks goes to Connie, Betty, and the caring and loving staff members at Stoneybrook. Euna loved preparing cakes, pies and other goodies for them.Euna is survived by her husband of 74 years, Raymond, as well as her four sons, Charles Ramsey Rugg of Shreveport; Walter Pierce Rugg of Sunnyvale, Texas; John Wayne Rugg of Canton, Texas; and Phillip Randall Rugg of Monroe; 14 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. She devoted her entire life to the service of others. In addition to her own children, she assisted in rearing several foster children in her home. Euna was primarily a mother, wife, and homemaker, but also managed to drive a school bus for Ouachita Parish School System for 30 years. After her own children were grown, Euna coached little boys and girls ball teams and played softball herself into her 70s. But her greatest enjoyment came when she was bowling with friends in various leagues where she lived. She also bowled in many national and state bowling tournaments.Euna's other passion was serving the Lord by serving others. In addition to the missions she and Raymond served, at various times she held callings in Relief Society, Primary and the Young Women's organizations of the LDS Church. Euna was loved and respected by all whom she met during her 92 years in this mortal life. She and Ray traveled to many states following their retirement, including a two-week vacation in Hawaii. They both loved seeing their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. They enjoyed visiting new places, meeting new people and sharing their love of life and their testimonies of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Visitation will be Friday, April 28, from 6:00 p.m.- 8:00 p.m. at Kilpatrick Funeral Home, 1321 North 7th Street in West Monroe.
