Martin Edward Harris, of Lillie, La., departed this life suddenly on February 27, 2023 at 72 years of age. Martin was the fifth of six children born to Sim and Jimmie Lee Harris of Bernice, La. on November 12, 1950.
Martin was a lifelong citizen of Union Parish who grew up in the piney hills around Bernice. After some years working in the oilfield, Martin ultimately becoming a truck driver, as which he enjoyed a career of nearly thirty years that allowed him to travel across most of continental North America. Those who loved Martin appreciated him for his intellect, sharp wit, wry sense of humor, and ability to never meet a problem he could not find a solution to. Martin enjoyed a variety of hobbies and projects, including building computers, fishing, tinkering in his shop, and gardening.
Martin leaves behind a family he loved dearly, including his wife Cassie of 36 years and five children: Shane Iliff (Tina) of Marshall, Tx.; Michelle Pletka (Todd) of West Monroe, La.; Mandi McNutt (Jason) of Dripping Springs, Tx.; Jennie Lee Harris of El Dorado, Ar.; and Natalie Harris of Fort Worth, Tx. Martin also leaves behind eight beloved grandchildren: Cole Farris, Zachary Hodge, Tyler Pletka, Erica Pletka, Alex McNutt, Andrew McNutt, Jeremiah Reeves, and Katelyn Iliff. Martin is additionally survived by four of his siblings: Wanda Mitcham of Spearsville, La.; Judy Harris of Ruston, La.; Alton Harris of Ruston, La.; and Olive Barton of Ruston, La.; as well as dozens of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by both of his parents and one older brother, Samuel “Sonny” Harris.
Services for Martin will be held at Pine Grove Baptist Church of Bernice, Louisiana on Friday, March 3, 2023 at 2:00 PM and he will be planted with the rest of the Harris’ in Pine Grove Cemetery shortly following the service under the direction and care of Kilpatrick Funeral Home, Farmerville. A visitation for friends will be held at 1:00 pm till time of service.
Martin’s family asks that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made in his name to Pine Grove Baptist Church.
