Sam proudly served his country as a trained gunnery officer in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict. Upon returning from the service, he met and fell in love with his future bride, Clara Bess Sills and they married in 1956. Sam retired as owner of Nolan Office Machines, Sales and Service after 32 years. Sam dearly loved his Lord and his church, New Chapel Hill Baptist Church, devoting much of his time and talents working there as he served as a deacon, on various committees, as a Sunday School teacher, and as a volunteer on maintenance and grounds for many years. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. Sam enjoyed meeting people, long conversations and interesting stories, and never met a stranger. He devoted a large amount of time to making special wood keepsakes for his children and especially, his grandchildren, using his talents of wood working, design, and painting. His grandchildren treasure the toys, furniture, and projects hand-made by him, as do many people in this church and community. He donated a large amount of time making shelving, trophy cabinets, and music storage cabinets for the West Ridge Middle School Choir department for several years. He loved to work in his garden, sharing his efforts and produce with his family and church. He also loved to design and work on wood working projects, spending time at the camp on Caney Lake, and was an avid baseball fan. He loved watching his grandchildren participate in their various sports teams and was their biggest fan.
